The Shoalhaven has a rich and varied history, from its Indigenous beginnings through to a colonial past to where things are today.
In its early days of settlement in the 1800s, the Shoalhaven was known for its timber industry, which encouraged logging to supply sleepers for the early railways. Wool and wheat, as well as fresh vegetables and fruit were shipped to Sydney from Jervis Bay Harbour. Today it is a manufacturing base, naval town and tourism and hospitality hotspot.
The area has become known for a number of different icons and landmarks, such as the historic Lady Denman Ferry in Huskisson, the Shoalhaven River and Nowra Bridge which connects the north and south, naval bases HMAS Albatross and Creswell, the Archer Racecourse named for our Melbourne Cup legend and many more.
Over the years, many businesses have come and gone, but some just seem to last despite the economic climate or season. We like to call them Shoalhaven Originals. These are businesses which have served the Shoalhaven for over a decade, and are well-known by the people of the town.
