Wray Owen Funerals is a family business which has been owned by Kath and Ian Strathie since 1985. It was originally established in 1953 by Maida and Wray Owen in Douglas Street opposite Nowra East Infants School. In 1995 Kath and Ian purchased Mullers Funerals which had been in operation since the 1860s. They merged the two businesses into the current 52 North Street, Nowra site.
With the acquisition came renovations and updating of facilities to include a 50 seat chapel, modern arrangement and administration offices and reception areas. Modern technology advancements have also featured and continue to feature in the upgrades.
Wray Owen Funeral’s success has been shared with the community, through the sponsorship of sporting clubs, scholarships for TAFE students, awards to arts groups and donations to many charities.
Funerals have changed over the years, and with the commissioning of the Shoalhaven Memorial Gardens and Crematorium Chapel complex, cremations have increased from 50 per cent to over 70 per cent, and there are more options for families to personalise their tribute services.
...services do not have to be held in chapels, they can take place in parks, on beaches, even in the backyard.

Today funerals are about families making the decisions it’s about having the talk of a lifetime. When people die they want to be remembered in their own way, having made the difficult decisions with their families beforehand. It’s about sharing and creating memories, their way. Celebrating and grieving in their space and in their time.

“Let your choices influence your funeral,” Ian said. “Talk to our experienced staff about the many and varied options, and then choose what is for you.” For example, services do not have to be held in chapels, they can take place in parks, on beaches, even in the backyard.
“Your first decision is burial or cremation. This can influence cost dramatically,” Ian said. “Then decide how you want to be remembered; formal, informal, nothing at all, a mix, something out of the ordinary. The choice is yours. Talk about it, and not just for five minutes. Write it down and get copies.”
Prearranging is also an option. This is the process of prepaying the funeral costs before the event. All monies are placed in trust as a requirement of law.
