Operating since 1902, Basha’s Floors and Blinds is the oldest retail business running in Nowra, with four generations of family ownership.
Owner Joe Basha’s grandfather bought what was a failing business in 1902 and built it up to provide a living for himself and his family.
“He also liked the fishing in the Shoalhaven River,” Joe said.
Joe has been involved with the long-standing company for most of his life.
He began working as a child, packing curtain parts in small bands and then learning to cut and join carpet in his teens.
By his 20s he was fitting window furnishings and in his 30s took over as director to become the fourth generation owner of Basha’s.
We don’t look for the sale, but rather to solve a customers problem or need.

Today the company employs 14 staff members who hold positions such as administration, measuring and consulting and installation of products.
The business is known for providing any type of floor covering, window furnishings such as blinds and curtains and external awnings.
Joe said customers had the benefit of being able to access an extensive range from the one shop.
“We also have long-standing relationships and trust,” he said.

“We don’t look for the sale, but rather to solve a customers problem or need.”
He said it was important people sought professional advice when it came to these kinds of products.
“The array of products is astounding,” he said.
“Cutting through to work out what is best for your budget, home and application is not easy.”
Some current trends in the industry include motorised window furnishing and the return of curtains.
“This is due to the better insulation offered and the range of fabrics and textures available.” Joe said.
Joe said a culture of strong customer service has been passed down through generations of the Basha family, which he believes is the key component of their success.
“We see competition come and go and we still seem to be around. We have a legacy to carry on. People know the name and they trust the name.”
Joe and his team greatly enjoy working in the Shoalhaven community, being able to meet old customers and the new generations of families which have dealt with their family over such a long time.
Basha’s is located at 61-63 Graham Street in Nowra and can be found online at bashasnowra.com.
