The jailing of former HMAS Creswell executive officer David Edward Lindsay Graham for child sex offences in the Northern Territory might have bought the case to a close but it's unlikely to put to rest the torment suffered by his two victims. It's been a busy week in the courts. Also facing charges of child abuse is former baseball coach Stuart Angus Mould from Sanctuary Point. Police allege he committed several crimes against young boys on Sydney's Northern Beaches and kept a 'torture tally'.
Two brothers - Alan Gillingwater, 31, and Robert Stanford, 25, of Old Erowal Bay - were refused bail for allegedly breaking into the weighbridge office of the West Nowra tip and making off with a safe.
There was poor behaviour in Shoalhaven City Council as well. Despite being elected mayor, Cr Amanda Findley was denied the chance to attend the Local Government Conference when her political opponents voted her off the list of delegates. Once again, petty politics and grandstanding has intruded upon commonsense. We can expect more of this as councillors shift allegiances and jockey for primacy ahead of next year's local government elections.
One thing council did get right, in partnership with the NSW government, was the Woollamia boat ramp upgrade, which it officially opened during the week. The ribbon was cut just in time for spring.
