THE Greater Illawarra Zone’s under 14s side will look to end their memorable Harold Moore Shield season on a high this Sunday, when they face Newcastle in the competition’s grand final at Chiswick’s Campbell Oval.
Throughout their seven pool matches, Greater Illawarra, headlined by Shoalhaven’s Drew and Jay Ramsden (Ulladulla United), Alex Dobson (Berry-Shoalhaven Heads) and Lachlan Malcolm (Batemans Bay), won six matches and only lost one.
Their six wins came against Inner West Harbour, North Shore, Fairfield-Liverpool, Parramatta, St George and Sutherland – with Scott Needham’s side only falling to South Eastern.
This record saw them book their spot in the semi-finals – pitting them against ACT at Figtree Park at the weekend.
Greater Illawarra, captained by Lachlan Malcolm, won the toss and elected to bat first.
Behind a courageous 42 from the skipper and 34 from Callum Milsom, the hosts posted a total 192 from their 50 overs.
In reply, Newcastle fell 48 runs short, being all out in the 47th over for 144.
Milsom (3/12), Willoughby Watson (3/12) and Cooper Harrison (2/30) did most of the damage with the cherry in the win.
The final between Greater Illawarra and Newcastle, who defeated Manly-Warringah in their semi-final, starts at 10am.
In other NSW Districts Cricket Association competition news, the under 16s Greater Illawarra Zone side weren’t as fortunate as their under 14s counterparts, falling to Newcastle 5/188 to 116 in their semi-final on Sunday at Harker Oval.
Elsewhere, the Greater Illawarra EG Weblin Shield (under 15s) side were eliminated from contention by Camden, losing 7/124 to 122 in their qualifying final.
In the WS Gee Shield competition, Greater Illawarra went 2-4-1 on the season, while the Arch Caswey Shield (under 12s) side managed a 4-3 record during their campaign – with both sides just missing out on finals action.
Finally, the girls Margaret Peden Shield (under 15s) team went 1-4 during their season assault, seeing them also just miss out on making the top four.
