North Nowra-Cambewarra's Justin Weller, the team's captain and coach, is excited by the squad they've assembled, following numerous trials, for the upcoming season.
"With a complete overhaul of how we run our representative structure, we decided to hold our trials and select the side earlier this year," Weller said.
"This has already proven very successful in our junior sides, who have all now held a couple of training sessions and have bonded well.
"Given we picked the past couple of sides last minute and we didn't get the chance to train together, it really put us behind compared to the other associations.
"As such, we have endeavoured to be as proactive as we can this season to ensure we get some training sessions in prior to our first game."
Joining Weller in the squad is fellow Norths players James Biggs, Justin Rumble and Nathan Thomas.
Teaming up with that quartet will be Berry-Shoalhaven Heads' Jarrod Mitchell, Dylan Cosgrove, Dale Lovatt and Daniel Troy and Bomaderry's Luke Jurancic and Kealan Blattner.
Rounding out the side, managed by Brad Ingram, are under 18s trio Cooper Bramley (Berry), Luke Jones (Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemens) and Jack Walsh (Norths), as well as development players Alec Dobson (Berry) and Jackson Ingram (Berry).
"I've very excited with the squad we have chosen because of the amount younger players, who will bring a more committed and enthusiastic approach to the games," the captain-coach said.
'"In the past couple of seasons, it has been a letdown when some of our top players haven't been very keen but that's not the case this season.
"We have a well-balanced side with plenty of options with both the bat and ball, with the latter being our strength.
"Although our bowling attack is young with the likes of Cooper Bramley, Justin Rumble and Luke Jones being selected, it gives us a solid variety - as the first two offer plenty of swing with Jones bringing height and bounce to our attack.
"Mix those three in with the consistency Daniel Troy, Kealen Blattner and myself and I feel we have a very well-rounded lineup."
Weller said the inclusion of the five junior players was part of the SDCA's new approach to the representative format.
"We've picked five junior players and two will be there as development players, as we keep a keen eye on our future," he said.
"With the older players not as keen to play, now is a great time to blood the younger ones coming through and give them the experience of playing against high-quality opposition.
"With the side only having one player over the age of 25, we are hoping to build a team that can play well together for a number of years to come."
Weller and his squad will now ramp up preparations for their campaign, which will start on September 25.
This will be the first of three round matches, with the competition reverting back to the old format which will see Shoalhaven play Illawarra, South Coast and Highlands prior to the top-two featuring in the decider.
"The goal this year is all about development - we have some amazing young talent coming through the Shoalhaven and we want to showcase them," Weller said.
"Given how young of a side we are, coming up against some very experienced sides will be a big test for the boys but I'm confident they will do well.
"It will all be an invaluable experience they'll take forward into future seasons, which will hopefully solidify the strength of cricket in the Shoalhaven."
