While it was super exciting to witness Australia's open age athletes compete in pursuit of Olympic and Paralympic berths, it was just as exciting to watch Nowra's junior athletes making their mark on the sport and battling it out for national titles, personal bests and competition experience.
Max Marshall kick-started the competition for Nowra in the under 14s age group.
Marshall ran a personal best in his 100 metres heat, clocking 12.25 for third place, earning himself a place in the final.
He then ran a brilliant final to win a bronze medal in 12.35.
His 200 metres heat earned him another new personal best (24.65) and another spot in the final.
Marshall went on to better his 200 metres heat time, running through for fourth place in the final in 24.40.
He was also the anchor for the NSW 4x100 metres relay team, where they took the gold medal in a combined time of 48.36.
Reilly Caswell competed in the under 15s 400 metres.
In the heat, he ran 53.88 for third place and qualified for the final.
He then raced strongly from lane nine in the final, holding on for fourth place in 53.48 - just outside his personal best.
Tom Duncan contested the under 15s 800 metres and ran a personal best of 2.11.95, finishing seventh in his heat.
Also contesting the 800 metres, but in the under 17s age group was Will Dyball.
Dyball ran a controlled race to finish seventh in his heat in a time of 2.00.88.
In addition, he competed in the 1500 metres and completed the race in 4.11.33 for eighth place in his heat.
Ella Dyball tested her endurance in the under 18s 2000-metre steeplechase, where she finished eighth in 8.04.97.
In the field, Samantha Peace got into the swing of things in the discus circle, throwing 46.02m to earn herself a place in the finals.
Peace was up against the country's best, with Dani Stevens taking the win with 62.74m.
She threw 47.15m in the final placing her sixth in Australia.
In the para events, Nowra had two representatives.
Akala Miller had a very successful meet, winning two bronze medals.
Miller was third in the under 17s 100 metres with 15.77 and third in the 200 metres (33.01).
Kynan Miller finished fourth in the under 15s discus (15.24m) and fourth in shot put (3.90m).
Miller also finished fifth in the 100 metres.
The Nowra club congratulates all their athletes on qualifying for nationals and competing against the other top athletes from around the country.
In other Nowra Athletics Club news, Kerrie Jones secured a silver medal in the 65 years female age group at the 2021 NSW Masters Athletics Throws Pentathlon State Championships, held at Wollongong on April 18.
The throws pentathlon consists of three attempts at each of the five throwing events in the order of hammer, shot put, discus, javelin and weight.
Jones threw 20.01 metres in the hammer and 6.24 metres in shot put.
In the discus, she hurled the 1kg weight 17.70 metres before spearing 13.72 metres in the javelin.
In the final event, she threw 8.47 metres in weight throw.
Jones earned a total of 2579 points to take the silver medal, which was a wonderful way to cap off her strong athletics season.
