Legacy raises about $30,000 in Nowra each year. That money goes to support families like the Piersons.
Petty Officer James Pierson died while deployed with HMAS Leeuwin late last year, leaving behind his wife Jodie and their two children.
Mrs Pierson said it was a shock, and she was thankful for the Legatees who had taken her family under their wing.
"It's not a situation we ever though we'd find ourselves in," she said.
"Life happens and horrible things happen, but I never thought we'd lose James on deployment. We're not at war.
"I first met my Legatees earlier this year. They helped me with paperwork and navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as help with school uniforms and pocket money for the kids.
"The financial help is valuable, but knowing people care for the situation we're in is more valuable."
Mrs Pierson said Legacy provided real support to real families.
"By supporting Legacy you support families who are in a tough situation - and it's appreciated," she said.
"Nowra is a Navy town, and it could be anyone's family who might need help."
Legacy Week is August 30 to September 5. To make a donation, head into the Bendigo Bank on Kinghorne Street, or Legacy House at 66 Bridge Street between 9am-4pm.
Donations can be made by cash or by card. All donations stay in the region to support local families who have lost a husband, wife or parent who served in the Australian Defence Force.
