Jasmine Greenwood breaks through for maiden world series gold medal

After a sensational year in 2019, where the Shoalhaven High School student won a bronze medal in London, Greenwood has gone one better and secured her first world open's gold medal.

Competing at the Melbourne Sports Centre against para-swimmers from 16 different countries, from February 14-16, Greenwood (S10) claimed first in the women's 100 metre freestyle multi-class race.

After clocking a time of 1:03.21 in the preliminaries, the Bay and Basin Amateur Swim Club product went into the final with the second fastest time - behind New Zealand's Sophie Pascoe (1:02.83).

But in the final, despite swimming marginally slower (1:03.40), Greenwood touched the wall first to win the gold medal from three-time Paralympian Ellie Cole (1:04.12) and Katherine Downie (1:03.76).

During the three-day meet, Greenwood also competed in the 100 metre backstroke and breaststroke.

In the women's 100 metre backstroke multi-class race, the 15-year-old finished in fifth, with a time of 1:12.77 - just behind winner Katja Dedekind (1:08.71).

Not to be outdone, Greenwood touched the wall in a time of 1:24.02, to finish in seventh position in the breaststroke final, behind winner Nikita Howarth - from New Zealand.

Greenwood's first place finish helped Australia claim top spot on the medal tally, with 16 gold medals.

She will now shift her focus to the NSW State Open Titles in Sydney from March 13-15, before the Tokyo Paralympic trials from June 14-19 in Adelaide.
