Injury rules out Kiama's Ali Day for rest of ironman season

Day, who claimed his second ironman title during last year's Ocean6 Series, had already missed the opening round of the summer, the Coolangatta Gold - an event he's won on six occasions - before he made his gut-wrenching decision this week.

"Twelve weeks ago I had a freak accident, breaking multiple bones in both my wrists, requiring surgery," Day said.

"At the time, I didn't know the extent or severity of what had occurred - I thought I'd be fine, never thinking how hard I'd have to work to get back moving again.

"Moving forward from that day, I have spent most days at the hand therapist, doing my rehab and everything else possible to put myself back on the start line this year.

"For three months, I've spent everyday in hope, for good news or the green light to go ahead.

"Unfortunately last week, after undergoing more scans, it become clear that my injuries need more time to heal.

"In looking out for me and my future, my surgeon made the call, informing me my wrists just wouldn't hold up - therefore ruling me out for the season, in the sport I love."

Despite the sad news, Day appreciates he wouldn't be where he is today without his strong support network.

"I would really like to thank the incredible team I've had around me at this time," Day, who trains with the Surfers Paraside SLSC, said

"I wouldn't be where I am with my recovery without you all.

"In particular, to Kel [King], my best friend, thank you for it all.

"All the support really does mean the world and I can't wait for the day I can hopefully return the favour."

While Day will miss the final four rounds of the series, which will see Nowra-Culburra product Kirsty Higgison fly the South Coast flag by herself, he is already planning his triumphant return to the surf.

"To all competing this season, good luck and have fun out there legends" he said.

"I can't wait to watch and see all the action unfold.

"Being forced to watch from the sidelines on will drive me to be better than I have ever been before - which everyone will see first hand in my return event, the 2020 Coolangatta Gold, which holds a special place in my heart."
