Bay and Basin area to now be serviced by two police stations

Bay and Basin residents who have long complained about policing issues in their area, have been given a unexpected boost, with the announcement the Huskisson Police station will remain open and operating after the new Bay and Basin station is opened.

It will mean the area will then serviced by two police stations, both fully staffed.

The actual break down of the number of actual personnel stationed at each has not been announced, however. 

South Coast MP Shelley Hancock inspected the progress of the new Bay and Basin station on Friday morning with Police Minister Troy Grant, and  revealed the Huskisson police station, slated for closure once the new facility came on line, would remain open.

“The original intention following completion of the new Bay and Basin Police Station was to close the Huskisson facility but following consultation with local police and the community, Huskisson Police Station will remain open and fully staffed,” Mrs Hancock said.

“The Huskisson station will continue to operate in conjunction with the Bay and Basin station and support local police and the Central Shoalhaven communities they serve." 

Meanwhile construction of the new Bay and Basin station in Kerry Street, Sanctuary Point, is on track to wrap up in the coming weeks.

Mrs Hancock said community and local officers were soon set to reap the benefits.

“The new station was a big win for the community and will enhance operational efficiency for police by incorporating investigative and exhibit storage, custody and general duty rooms, as well as a meal room, lockers and other amenities to support officers,” she said.

Despite repeated community calls for station to be a 24-hour operation, the government has rejected the idea.

“Construction is set to complete imminently and the station is on track to be fully operational by the end of April," Mrs Hancock said.

Mr Grant said the Bay and Basin base was one of many police stations across the state undergoing construction or upgrades.

“Just last week we announced another $100 million to build new and upgraded stations across NSW, as well as a new training facility,” Mr Grant said.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time for the NSW Police Force – they’ve undergone a historic re-engineering process, we’re delivering a historic amount of extra police, and there’s more and more new stations like the Bay and Basin being built to support their vital work.”

Final construction activities currently underway, including concreting, external brickwork and external storm-water connections, with furniture for the interior fit-out starting to arrive.

Construction was fast-tracked thanks to an innovative pre-built system that allowed the main building to be constructed offsite and assembled at the location.
