Poulton has been riding for more than 20 years and has medaled as a junior, but this is his first ever State win.
Riding for Clarence St Cyclery, Poulton won the State title over a tough 2km Homebush Bay circuit in testing conditions.
The circuit featured some tight cornering and a slight climb up to the finish.
The race was held over one hour plus two laps and the strong winds on the day made the race particularly hard.
The field included several strong teams who were always attacking the bunch, trying to get their riders into the winning break.
Poulton was always at the front of the race and chased most of the attacks managing to bring the riders back to the bunch.
“I wanted the race to finish with a bunch sprint, which it did, but it was important to be in the first five riders through the last corner to line up for the finish line,” he said.
Going into the last corner Poulton was in third position with one rider having a 20-metre lead on the bunch.
Poulton started his sprint out of the last corner and was able to round up the leading riders to take the win.
He said he is delighted with his victory.
“It feels fantastic,” he said.
“It’s been a long time coming, and to win against such a top field that included riders from all the major Sydney clubs was excellent.
“It is exciting to finally win a State title and a senior elite one at that even more so.”
And this latest effort has placed him in the top three of the NSW Road racing pointscore.
This victory followed on from his strong performance racing in Bathurst the previous weekend where he finished eighth in the NSW Elite Hill Climb Championship and ninth in the 100km Blayney to Bathurst road race.
“I would like to thank my sponsors Clarence St Cyclery and TREK Bicycles for their continued support,” he said.
He is now focusing on the Canberra Tour in two weeks time.
