THE NSW Country Under 18 women's basketball team has created history, breaking a 31-year drought to take out the National Championship in Perth.
The NSW Country side, which is coached by Shoalhaven development officer Scott Balsar and managed by another well-known local basketball identity, Wendy Hannett scored a thrilling two-point win over the South Australia Metropolitan team in the final.
NSW Country won by two, 58-56, to claim the gold medal, with the winning basket coming right on the buzzer as the game appeared to be headed into overtime after the sides were locked up 56-all.
Shoalhaven's Jaimee Kennedy captained the NSW team, while fellow Shoalhaven player Peta Eddington also played a leading role.
It is the first time NSW Country has won the National Under 18 Women's title since its inception in 1974.
In fact back then there wasn't a NSW Country side, it was only a combined NSW side.
Coach Balsar was delighted with the team's performance.
"It's great to be part of a history making team," he said.
"It was a thrilling win - it's been a long time coming that's for sure."
Wollongong's Teagan Burke scored the winning basket, getting the shot away with just a second left on the clock.
"We were the best side all night in the final," Balsar said.
"We led by up to 10 at one point and were in total control for three and a half quarters of the match, but then suffered a scoring drought and SA fought back to be right in the game with three threes in a row to tie it up.
"We had the last chance to score, the clock got to six seconds to go and Teagan got the shot off with a second to go, it hit the backboard and went in - I was ecstatic - it was just fantastic."
There was a rumour that the jubilant coach may have even done a backflip, but that is yet to be confirmed.
Not to be outdone Shoalhaven's two representatives in the NSW Country Men's Under 18 side, Ben Dowdell and Alex Gynes won silver medals at the national titles.
Also staged in Perth, the NSW side went down to Victoria Metropolitan in the final by 17.
Shoalhaven's other NSW Country rep, Razz Muir is also away at the moment playing in the National Under 16 Titles in Canberra.
The young NSW Country side has had a bright start to their campaign beating Victoria Country by two and Western Australia Metropolitan by 10 yesterday and were to play another game late last night.
