OpenField will bring contemporary art out into the streets around the town next June, and will also include as performances and a pop-up cinema.
Organisers of the event are calling for unwanted colourful blocks (if you have a Star Wars Death Star kit even better) to assist renowned creative duo Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro in their endeavours to make a sculpture for the festival.
"We are attracted to LEGO as a lot of our work is about dismantling ...[it's] also very seductive," they told the Mercury. "Each time we return to this medium there is great joy getting immersed into it."
The first collaborative work they created was in 2010 which was a body of work about the Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster.
This time the pair said they were contemplating making a "BigFoot" but the final creation would depend on the what materials came in and adapting it to the space.
Healy and Cordeiro's practice predominantly involves the creation of sculpture and installation work, much of it site-specific and of monumental scale, out of repurposed everyday objects and materials.
"Our work often investigates materials that we have seen come to rise, then become obsolescent in our own lifetime," the artists' said.
"In the past we have worked with caravans, houses, cars, planes, trees, ikea furniture, smart phones, VHS Cassettes, dinosaurs and skull replicas, but we would have to say our most recent and favourite obsession is with aeroplane parts."
OpenField Co-Chair Lenka Kripac said sustainability will underscore everything at the festival which will run in June 2023.
The largely free event will showcase contemporary art in and around the town of Berry in unique spaces like non-museum venues, including halls, community spaces and natural reserves. The program will also include performances, talks, live music and a pop-up cinema.
A LEGO donation box has been set up at the Berry Community Library at the Uniting Church on Albert St Berry until June 2022. After that, it will move to other locations around the Shoalhaven.
Updated locations will be available on www.openfield.org.au.
