Heavy rainfall fell overnight on Wednesday and the wet weather will extend across the South Coast, Illawarra, Sydney, the Central Tablelands and Hunter region on Thursday.
Daily totals of up to 140 millimetres are expected in the region on Thursday, bringing the possibility of flash flooding and landslides.
The low lying intersection of Berry Street and Albatross road is underwater and impassable, while Terara Road is closed in several places.
A severe thunderstorm warning will be issued if this activity eventuates, with the bureau expected to issue its next warning by 11am on Thursday.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
- Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
- After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
- Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
An accident on Picton Road, just past Mount Keira Road, has affected westbound traffic.
The Illawarra Highway at Taylor Road is closed in both directions due to flooding.
Train disruptions
