Cameron Phelps won the start from his dad Steve, closely followed by Wayne Norris, Bill Jauncey, and Mick Fairbairn. All were sailing Spirals except for Michael's Finn. Bill was testing a new radical development rig so his yardstick was reduced from 125 to 120 and his handicap was also reduced by five.
Bill actually led Wayne to the first mark but not being used to being in front, he sailed on further and Wayne followed him. By the time they returned to the correct mark Mick had hit the front and was never headed from there.
Bill clawed back second place on the run which he also held for the rest of the afternoon, with Wayne third and Steve pressing him hard all afternoon. On a couple of occasions Steve got ahead of Wayne, but never for long. Cameron slipped back in the light patches of wind.
The Bomaderry Bowling Club Championship based on class yardstick was just won by Michael by 16 seconds from Bill, then Wayne another 40 seconds back in third. Steve in fourth was just behind Wayne with Cameron fifth.
The Kel Campbell Point Score is decided on individual handicaps and Bill revelled in the light conditions he likes to take this one out and cut his handicap by three minutes. While the conditions were not Camerons, he shone through to grab second place from Steve, Wayne and Mick.
On Sunday, January 30, the club will host the annual marathon which starts 10.45am with a sail to Shoalhaven Heads where the fleet stops for lunch, then restarts for the return trip to Nowra.
This event is also a heat of the Spiral Association of Australia Traveller's Trophy and a heat of the interclub GOF Trophy in memory of Ray Fairbairn, so boats usually come from Sydney and local clubs.
This Saturday the club sails heat six of the Kel Campbell Point Score and heat six of the Bomaderry Bowling Club Championship and as usual visitors are always welcome. The start is scheduled for around 2.15pm.
