Workers were able to suggest songs for the project reflecting their experience of living and working in the area.
Transport NSW has collated the song recommendations into a single playlist. It is a project by the government to raise awareness about plans currently underway to upgrade the Princes Highway into a safer, easier and more connected road.
The playlist celebrates the natural beauty and iconic landscapes of the south coast.
Over half the playlist are songs by Australian artists.
Songs include:
- 'Flame Trees' by Sarah Blasko for your journey down the Mount Ousley escarpment.
- 'Working Class Man' and 'Big Country's Steeltown' by Jimmy Barnes, celebrating the steel history of the Wollongong region.
- 'Homeward Bound' by Simon and Garfunkel, 'Our Backyard' by Travel Collins and 'Coming Home' by Alex Lloyd in recognition that the drive south from Wollongong is the homeward commute for many Transport NSW workers.
- 'Don't Change' by INXS in recognition of the beauty of Bombo Beach, north of Kiama, which is simply unchangeable.
- 'Red Red Wine' by UB40 testifying to the wineries at the foot of Cambewarra Mountain. Look west and you will see Cambewarra Mountain and understand why 'Ain't no Mountain High Enough' by Marvin Gaye has been included.
- 'Follow the Sun' by Xavier Rudd, 'Brightside of the Road' by Van Morrison and 'Great Southern Land' by Icehouse because they capture the lifestyle of the coastal communities south of Nowra.
- 'Lighthouse' by The Waifs as you pass the lighthouses along the coast of Kiama, Crookhaven, Jervis Bay, Ulladulla and Eden.
- We're all in this Together' by Ben Lee. The Princes highway cuts through areas still charred from the Black Summer bushfires. The region has been through a lot, and yet the community has banded together, demonstrating that - to quote Lee - we are all in this together.
