The pinnacle of touch football in the Illawarra, the men's and women's Premier League, which plays under the banner of Illawarra and Group Seven rugby league clubs, was set for its biggest season yet with two additional teams joining the competition.
"It's disappointing to miss out this season, as we had representative teams from Nowra and Appin set to join the Premier League this year - boosting the men's competition to eight teams, while our women's competition also attracted a record six teams," Wollongong Touch Association vice-president Tim Robinson said.
"We had a few options in place to run the season if it was delayed from its original start date of September 13, however with the outlook bleak for a return of community sport before November, it forced us to make the tough decision to abandon the competition for 2021."
The decision comes off the back of NSW Touch's decision to cancel the 2021 Vawdon Cup and Country Championships which the Wollongong Devils representative teams feature heavily in.
At this stage, the NSW State Cup is still scheduled for early December.
Registrations are now open for Wollongong Touch's summer social and junior competitions, despite a delayed start the club will look to run both competitions as soon as restrictions ease.
