Illawarra Hawks release Max Darling from long-term deal

The Kiwi star was seen as a long-term foundation chip when he inked the multi-year deal, but saw precious little court time in his first campaign in Wollongong, averaging just five minutes across 17 appearances.

The lack of floor time came even as marquee big Cam Bairstow sat most of the season injured, with AJ Ogilvy turning an injury-replacement slot into club captaincy and new deal.

The Hawks have added Boomers star Duop Reath as a marquee big for next season.

Sam Froling will return as will and re-signed AJ Ogilvy, while Emus standout Akoldah Gak has also been upgraded from a development player contract to the club's senior roster.

It meant the club had no intention of standing in his way as he sought greater opportunities elsewhere.

"The people of Wollongong welcomed me with open arms and I will look back at my one season at the Hawks fondly," Darling said.

"I got to spend a year learning my craft under Goorj [Brian Goorjian] and working out with some really talented players, but all I really want is more opportunity.

"I wish the Hawks all the best and hope they bring the Illawarra region another title soon."

His time was limited, but Goorjian couldn't fault Darling's attitude and commitment despite limited chances.

"Max was the consummate professional last season and a great young guy to have around the group," Goorjian said.

"Whenever his number was called he gave it his all, and his effort at practice and his support of his teammates was first class.

"I wish Max all the best on the next step of his basketball journey.

"He's still developing his game but he's athletic for his size and he's got a great attitude so I hope he lands on his feet and prospers from here on out."
