Grida was a hurt in the final moments of the thrilling 73-71 win over the New Zealand Breakers on Saturday, with the Hawks confirming he had failed to prove his fitness.
"Grida dislocated his left thumb in the final quarter against the Breakers after fighting for a loose ball," a statement said.
"After imaging and consulting medical specialists, the decision has been made to hold him out of tonight's clash with the ladder-leading United."
Illawarra confirmed Grida will be replaced by emerging Illawarra talent Lachie Dent in the team.
Melbourne are on top of the NBL ladder with a 23-7 record, while Illawarra are fourth at 15-14.
