This week we were alerted to the Shoalhaven Historical Society's acceptance of perhaps the largest and most spectacular sporting trophy to be lodged in its collection.
The superb Nicholson Cup won by Jim Regan in 1925 for the South Coast Skiff Championship at the Numbaa regatta has been held by members of the winner's family for almost a century.
The stunning silver trophy, which is incredibly heavy, most likely was designed as a table centrepiece.
It's extremely elaborate, especially for its time in the 1920s.
The donation also led to local historian and former South Coast Register journalist Alan Clark researching Jim Regan's life and that, in its own right, is a fascinating read.
As well as being well-known for his rowing prowess Jim was also a champion cricketer with the legendary Pyree club and played rugby league with the Pyree Rovers.
The trophy will now be on display at the Nowra Museum in Plunkett Street, Nowra (the former police station) and is certainly well worth a look.
