Nowra Show On-Farm Dairy Challenge winners announced

Despite the 2021, 145th Nowra Show being postponed due to COVID concerns, a number of individual competitions have still been held.

Showjumping, the South Coast Beef Schools' Competition and the alpaca show, which are all qualifying events for Sydney Royal were held last weekend.

The On-Farm Challenge, open to both unregistered and registered cattle of all dairy breeds, was held prior to the scheduled running of the show.

It is a competition where dairy cattle are judged in their natural environment, on farm, not in a show ring.

Again in 2021 the event was backed by David and Sue Boyd, of RH Boyd and Sons who provided a superb accommodation package in Sydney for the winners.

First place, as judged by Jenny Gray, was taken out by Alan and Sandra Henry's Numbaa Leigh 3539, of Numbaa.

Pyree's Tom and Kyleigh Cochrane secured second place with Forest Meadow Hefty Bridgette, third went to Brent Pepper of Coolamount Holsteins, of Numbaa entry Atwood Trixy, while fourth was the Herne and Russell entry Boscawen Doorman Belle from Brundee.

In her judge's comments Mrs Gray said Numbaa Leigh 3539 was an eight-year-old, fifth lactation cow.

"A cow who displays so much dairyness, length, depth and openness," she said.

"A great long, wide rump, with ideal set to the leg and great heel depth.

"The udder is still very strongly attached, above the hock, a deep suspensory ligament with width and height in the rear udder with ideal teat placement."

On-Farm Challenge organiser and Nowra Show deputy chief steward Steve King presented the awards at a special presentation on Tuesday.
