An operation to keep the community safe was launched on Wednesday, December 16.
Operation Chance will target hoon behaviour, in particular unregistered trail bikes and burnouts in the Bay and Basin area.
Additional police will be tasked to the Bay and Basin area from within South Coast Police District to support the operation.
Sergeant Ian Griffin said the operation will involve school-based education about safe trail bike use, as well as trail-bike trained police in and around local tracks, and increased traffic and highway patrols.
"This has come about as a result of increased complaints from the general public," Sergeant Griffin said.
"It's high-risk behaviour, and we will do anything we can to reduce road trauma in the South Coast Police District.
"We will be looking to roll the program out further in the South Coast District as time goes on."
He said youth were often unaware of how to use unregistered trail bikes legally and safely - for instance, that unregistered trail bikes are never allowed to be ridden on public roads.
Penalties for hooning or illegal trail bike riding range from infringement notices to a court date.
Offenders may have their vehicle confiscated.
