The HARS Aviation Museum aircraft will take off from the Shellharbour Airport to commemorate the first flight of the DC-3 on December 17, 1935.
The DC-3 was considered a major innovation for passenger and freight operations and the aircraft played a significant role during World War 2.
In Australia, the DC-3 was operated by many airlines including Qantas, and the aircraft flew nearly 60 years of operational service as military transport until March 1999, a record yet to be surpassed.
Marking the anniversary, HARS will fly one of its DC-3s from Shellharbour Airport along the coast to Long Reef, then subject to air traffic clearance some orbits just east of the Harbour Bridge before flying over Sydney Airport then to Cronulla and along the coast back to Shellharbour Airport.
Subject to weather conditions and air traffic movement, the DC-3 is expected to take off from Shellharbour at 11.45 am and return shortly after 1 pm.
The HARS Aviation Museum is open daily (except for Christmas Day) from 9.30 to 3.30 and later to 5 pm during January school holidays.
