ONLY one of the six teams from the Greater Illawarra Cricket Zone won their round two matches of the NSW youth championships at the weekend.
That team was the Illawarra Highlanders under 13s team, who defeated ACT/Southern Districts Barons at Victoria Park.
Spearheaded by 43 from first-drop Blake Cattle, the visitors posted 199 from the 39.5 overs.
Aminda Weerasoriya (4-28) was the best of the Barons' bowlers.
In reply, the hosts could only make 106, as Cattle (3-7) and Sam Harwood (3-11) took three wickets each for the Highlanders - who are now 2-0 this campaign.
Elsewhere in the under 13s, the Greater Southern Marlins lost their second straight match, going down to ACT/SD Kings at Reid Oval.
Batting first, the hosts made 132, despite Jaycob Constantinou (2-10), Lucas Kay (2-25) and Joshua Peters (2-29) all taking two wickets each.
In response, the Marlins fell seven runs (126) short of victory, with Kay (32) top-scoring.
In round three, the Highlanders host the Kings and the Marlins take on the Barons.
In both the under 14s and under 15s competitions, the Marlins and Highlanders suffered defeats.
After defeating Greater Illawarra rivals the Highlanders in round one, the Marlins under 14s side lost 7-127 to 126 to the Kings, despite strong efforts from Jacob Coleman (35) and Blake Mackrell (2-11).
While the Highlanders slumped to their second straight defeat in that age group, losing 103-95 to the Barons, with Alby Ferguson (3-21) and Jesse Hol (40) doing all they could in the loss.
On Sunday, the Marlins lock horns with the Barons and the Highlanders play the Kings.
Finally, in the under 15s, the Highlanders and Marlins lost to the Barons and Kings respectively.
The former went down 9-171 to 106, despite Angus Campbell's 28 and 2-28, while the latter lost 4-183 to 7-170 - with Berry-Shoalhaven Heads duo Tom Fletcher (46) and Max Carr-McCarron (2-41) the standouts in the loss.
In round three of the Thunder Pool, Illawarra faces the Kings and Greater Southern takes on the Barons.
