But we've faced it and we've risen up. It has made our community stronger. Now I see us stepping away from those dark days.
It's lovely to see this quiet optimism making its way back into our community. The positives are coming back into our lives.
This summer is shaping up as a good one and while we watch the bush heal, the community is healing too. Every day takes us to a place of strength.
I don't underestimate the reality of our situation - there are still individuals and businesses doing it tough and our first priority is to them.
But we should not get bound up in negative talk.
There are plenty of good things happening.
Our local economy, in particular, is doing so much better than anyone would have predicted.
Almost one year on, we're seeing increased spending and job vacancies in the Eurobodalla.
Businesses have confidently navigated new operating environments and many are doing a roaring trade, supported by residents committed to buying local and visitors coming with big hearts and 'empty eskys'.
On a personal level I'd like to say it's been an honour and a privilege to help and support my community.
This year is one that will stay with me forever. How grateful I am to have been part of the greater good.
