Minister for Local Government and South Coast MP Shelley Hancock said the upgrade was a hard-fought win for the community.
"For years I have campaigned for this dangerous stretch of road to be upgraded," Mrs Hancock said.
"Given its poor safety record, Currarong Road is in need of an urgent upgrade. Residents of Currarong deserve better, with the current road a narrow two-lane, undivided, undulating and high-speed rural road."

An initial $1.45 million was secured for the upgrade before the last state election but Shoalhaven City Council said more cash was needed for the upgrade to begin.
"I have now secured the required funding and want to see works commence as soon as possible," Mrs Hancock said.
Planned work involves a widened centre line, shoulder widening and profile line marking along a 4.2km stretch of Currarong Road at Currarong, from about 200 metres north of Lighthouse Road to about 4.2 kilometres north along Currarong Road.
The NSW Government has issued Shoalhaven City Council with a funding agreement so that work can begin as soon as possible.
Funding has been secured in partnership with the State and Federal Government as part of the COVID-19 stimulus Road Safety program. Work will be undertaken by Shoalhaven City Council.
