Nowra man Bill Hancock raised concerns over the closure of Scenic Drive, off Bridge Road, as shown by the latest plans for the bridge upgrade and surrounding intersections which has been released.
"The Nowra CBD is failing, suffering badly from rat run traffic congestion, especially Moss and North streets with traffic trying to access the hospital, and Hyam Street is prone to flooding," Mr Hancock said.
"The bridge project is $342 million, what consideration has Transport for NSW given to the much bigger announcement of a $434 million upgrade at the hospital?
"What are the plans for traffic, including construction and emergency vehicles to get to and come from the hospital through the few other narrow residential streets that are available?
"The proposal says a roundabout on Illaroo Road will improve access to the northern foreshore, great, but the closure of Scenic Drive at Bridge Road removes one of the access roads to the southern foreshore, the new aquatic centre, and Scenic Drive's use as one of the access roads to Shoalhaven District Hospital."
Transport for NSW says it has met with representatives from Health Infrastructure and is aware of plans for the proposed upgrade to Shoalhaven District Hospital.
"We will continue to consult with stakeholders including Health Infrastructure, Shoalhaven City Council and emergency services as the project progresses," a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
"Construction on the Nowra Bridge project will be carried out in a way that minimises delay and disruption to local and through traffic.
"The intersection of Scenic Drive and Bridge Road will be closed during the early stages of the project to improve safety, connectivity and amenity."
The spokesperson said the community would be informed prior to this closure and in advance of any subsequent local road changes and detours.
"Once closed, the Scenic Drive and Bridge Road intersection will still be used by construction vehicles to avoid impacts to surrounding local roads," the spokesperson said.
"Hyam Street, North Street and other local roads will be available for motorists and emergency vehicles to access the hospital."
