A goal from Susannah Jarman proved the difference between the two sides at North Nowra's Shoalhaven Regional Hockey Complex.
In the day's other women's fixture, Shoalhaven Heads Mermaids drew 1-all with Allsorts - with Detta Duren and Yasmin Phelan scoring their team's respective goals.
On the men's side of the draw, Berry also got their premiership defence off to a strong start, downing Basin 2-nil, thanks to efforts from Terry Kennedy and Jeffrey Weber.
The final match of the round was a goal-fest between Shoalhaven Heads Pirates and Burrawang.
A Mark Bisby hat-trick, as well as goals from Angus Hill and Saxon Macquarie, helped Burrawang win 5-3.
In the loss, Mitchell Wilson (two) and Liam Connelly found the back of the net.
In round two, Berry plays Burrawang and Pirates clash with the Basin in the men - with Mermaids and Basin and Berry and Allsorts locking horns in the women.
