"We are really looking forward to bringing back our $43M art collection to the site and to welcoming Shoalhaven residents, who have been our greatest supporters, to the new facility at the end of next year, along with tourists from all over Australia and the world" Ms Ely said.
Early works had already begun on on the site in April, undertaken by Shoalhaven-based company Jervis Bay Groups.
Construction of the new gallery and creative learning centre will begin in July 2020, with an anticipated completion date of October 2021.
The new underground gallery will help protect the $43 million collection from bushfire.
During the Currowan fire the majority of the Trust's art was trucked into storage in Sydney.
The thermal stability subterranean gallery will also be good for the environment, saving on electricity costs.
