Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there were no official marches, no official gatherings but it did not stop thousands of people across the Shoalhaven who were out on their driveways just before 6am to take part in the Light Up The Dawn initiative.

Across the country, hundreds of thousands of Australians took part in the initiative to mark the sacrifice made by so many to make our country what it is today.

South Coast Police District officers also paid their respects with special visits made to numerous memorials across the region and laid wreaths.

Officer in Charge of the Nowra Police Station, Inspector Ray Stynes laid wreaths at Nowra, Bomaderry and Greenwell Point, while wreaths were also laid at Huskisson, Sussex Inlet, Milton and Ulladulla.

At Berry, Commander of South Coast Police District Superintendent Greg Moore, and local Berry officer Senior Constable Kyle Lavender also laid a wreath.

"It was sad and unfortunate that we couldn't gather as we normally would on Anzac Day, to remember the Diggers who have passed," Inspector Stynes said.

"It is still important we remember them and pay our respects and not forget the sacrifice made by so many.

"The strategies the government and community did put in place in relation to the community marking the event were great - and I participated at the end of my driveway.

"It was a change for us [police] as well. We usually attend a number of services and marches across the region each Anzac Day.

"And I enjoy doing that - as the officer in charge of Nowra and representing all Nowra police it's something I take pride in - personally it was disappointing we couldn't and I share the angst with the community that we couldn't do it as normal.

"There were other ways to do it and even though we weren't able to have a normal Anzac Day we will never forget."

NSW Ambulance paramedics at the Bomaderry station also paid their respects, spread out in front of their station at dawn as the last post played.
