Shoalhaven City Council has allocated $50,000 to the Nowra Show society and $125,000 to other shows and events in the region at the strategy and assets meeting on Tuesday, February 11.
At the official opening of the Nowra Show, Minister for Local Government and South Coast MP Shelley Hancock announced Shoalhaven City Council had received the maximum $250,000 grant from the Bushfire Community Resilience Fund from the state government.
Of the funds $50,000 was given to the Nowra Show Society, $25,000 to the Kangaroo Valley Society, $25,000 to the Milton Show Society, $50,000 to the Milton-Ulladulla Rotary Club for the Ulladulla Blessing of the Fleet and $25,000 to the Friends of Milton Library for running Storyfest 2020.
$75,000 was not allocated at the meeting and council resolved to seek submissions on how it would be spent.
The motion on how to allocate the grant was one of several urgent motions put forward at the meeting by Council Patricia White.
"We struggle every year to get enough money out for funding events, we have a tourism budget that does fund events as well," Cr White said.
"They are all credible causes, they are all well-run events, they know how to do it - they just need the money to do it."
Mayor Amanda Findley wanted the motion to be deferred to a workshop and the funds decided there and council's CEO agreed.
"A a number of requesting come through the recovery action team... Shannan Perry Hall has prepared a report to come to you with a whole range of options to consider in that discussion," CEO Stephen Dunshea said.
"What I would like to suggest is that this becomes part of that overall list of things we consider on Thursday."
Cr Mitchell Pakes hoped the Kangaroo Valley and Milton Show would follow the lead of the Nowra Show after receiving the funding and make their gate entry free.
"This is a very quick and easy way to get funding out to our very long-standing societies within the city to benefit our residents directly," he said.
"I would ask, because council is giving an injection to help the Kangaroo Valley Show and the Milton show, whether they would give consideration to relax the entry fees to make it possible for all to enjoy."
Mayor Amanda Findley and CEO Stephen Dunshea voted against the motion.
