Last Saturday was wet and windy on the river for the start of Nowra Community Sailing Club's heat 11 of the Kel Campbell Point Score and heat nine of the Bomaderry Bowling Club Championship. The start was tricky with the outgoing tide and rapidly easing wind, but Michael Fairbairn sailing GOF mastered the conditions best to win the start from visitor Merve Lotze on Dynamite, Wayne Norris on Never Satisfied, and Bill Jauncey sailing Twist 'n Shout.

As expected Michael's well sailed Finn dinghy soon cleared out from the three Spirals which were led to the first mark by Merve from Wayne and Bill. All three were within seconds of each other for the run with the wind with Merve still in front of the three Spirals at the end of the first lap.
Michael extended his lead in the second lap while Bill managed to get a few seconds on Wayne and Merve to just squeeze into the lead of the Spiral fleet. However at the end of the third lap Merve had wrestled the lead back from Wayne and Bill, but with only seconds between the three Bill took the honours back from Wayne and Merve on lap four.
Michael crossed the finish line nearly six minutes ahead of Bill who beat Merve by three seconds and Wayne by seven, the Spiral finishing order not being decided until the last couple of hundred metres!
The Bomaderry Bowling Club Championship is decided on boat class yardstick and the three Spirals grabbed a very narrow victory over Michael's Finn by only 16 seconds for Bill, 14 seconds by Merve, and 11 by Wayne. The whole fleet on yardstick finished within 16 seconds - amazingly close racing!
The Kel Campbell Point Score, being decided on individual handicaps, again went to Bill from Merve, Wayne and Michael.
Next Saturday Nowra Community Sailing Club will sail heat 12 of the Kel Campbell Point Score and heat 10 of the Bomaderry Bowling Club Championship starting at 14.20. Visitors are always welcome.
