Cultural heritage digs have been undertaken at a number of Aboriginal sites of significance as part of planning for the new Nowra Bridge project.

Transport for NSW and site officers from Nowra Local Aboriginal Land Council completed the work in September.

Those digs will be among a number of topics including questions on land claims and Aboriginal participation in the bridge construction process to be addressed at a Nowra Bridge Project Aboriginal Community Engagement day this Saturday, October 19.

Transport for NSW will host the community engagement day at the Nowra Showground between 9am and noon.

Heritage digs were carried out near Bomaderry Creek and in Illaroo Road near the intersection of Fairway Drive.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said consultation with the local Aboriginal community about the findings from this work would be carried out.

"Transport for NSW will continue to work with the local Aboriginal community and keep the wider community informed as planning for the project progresses," the spokesperson said.

Project team members will be available at the event to provide information on the project background including engagement, employment and other opportunities.

"The Aboriginal community engagement day is an opportunity for locals to ask questions about the project, including engagement, employment and other opportunities for the Aboriginal community," the spokesperson said.

The NSW and Australian governments have each committed $155 million in funding for a new four-lane bridge over the Shoalhaven River as well as upgraded intersections and additional lanes on the Princes Highway.

"The project will improve traffic flow and ease congestion on a major section of the Princes Highway while delivering faster and more reliable journeys within the Nowra-Bomaderry area," the spokesperson said.
