The Kangaroo Valley community is jumping on the Garage Sale Trail iniative, a national program that sees communities across New South Wales come together on one weekend to swap their wares and raise awareness for recycling.
The initiative has more than 50 councils involved, and while Shoalhaven Council is not yet part of the campaign, the Kangaroo Valley is forging its own event.
More than 20 garage sales will be held in one place on Saturday, October 19. Betty's Bar, 2038 Moss Vale Road, Kangaroo Valley will be the place to buy and sell.
The mega garage sale will run from 9am to 2pm and is set to be part of a big weekend in Kangaroo Valley, with the folk festival on the same weekend.
Each garage sale host will pay a small free to cover venue hire and all additional funds will be donated to Kangaroo Valley Public School.
Kanagaroo Valley resident Natalie Harker moved to the Shoalhaven from Sydney 12 months ago.
She said the Garage Sale Trail campaign has proved very popular in the city, and she's looking forward to it taking off here.
"It's huge in Sydney, they almost turn into laneway parties," she said.
"I am always trying to do what I can to help this planet and this seemed like a great way to do it, and get to know people too - it's a great way for the community to connect."
While there may be a little more farming equipment up for grabs than she was used to in Sydney, Natalie's looking forward to scooping some bargains.
A $2 rum decanter picked up from a garage sale in Sans Souci many years ago has been the standout among her thrifting finds.
Natalie said it's her hope that if the community garage sale is a success, Shoalhaven Council will look at committing to being part of the national event in 2020.
