Brock Alexander Cohen, 22, pleaded guilty to negligent driving and driving with illicit drugs in his system.
Court papers said Cohen was driving a Holden Commodore west on Moss Vale Road at Beaumont, on the western side of Cambewarra Mountain, around 8.25am on October 13, 2018, when the near side of the vehicle hit the kerb.
Police said Cohen lost control of the car, with the front end digging into the embankment and flipping onto its roof, before coming to rest on the roadway.
A female passenger in the vehicle suffered a large laceration to her forehead, which court papers said left her skull exposed.
The woman was transported to Shoalhaven District Hospital in a serious condition and had to undergo corrective surgery.
She also suffered bruising to her heart and spent the evening in intensive care.
Cohen refused medical treatment but was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital for mandatory blood tests which revealed he had amphetamines, methylamphetamine and traces of cannabis in his system at the time.
In Nowra Local Court on September 24 Magistrate Gabriel Fleming placed Cohen on an 18-month community corrections order, meaning he can serve his sentence in the community rather than in jail.
She also fined him $3000 and disqualified him from driving for two years.
