October brings lots of exciting exhibitions and events to Shoalhaven Regional Gallery. The school holidays are nearly upon us again and there's plenty to keep children entertained. On Thursday, October 3 the gallery is delighted to welcome back Angie Cass. Angie has been a collage artist and illustrator for 23 years and brings a wealth of experience to her exciting animation workshops. There will be two sessions with Angie, 10am to 12.30pm for nine to 12-year-olds and 1.30 to 4.30pm for 12 to 18-year-olds, where students will use collage techniques to create a team DSLR animation.
On October 8, 9 and 10 the gallery's public programs officer Fiona McFadyen is conducting workshops for three to 18-year-olds using a range of materials and techniques, from weaving, to painting to creating artist books. You can read about these workshops and book in at humanitix.com.au.
Adults can also get creative with Meroogal Art Prize finalist Zuza Zochowski in a two-day plein air watercolour and collage workshop on Saturday and Sunday, November 9 and 10. Students will investigate experimental methods in creating a final composition using watercolour and collage, and lunch and materials are provided.
The gallery will also be out and about in the community sharing free art activities.
Shoalhaven Arts is supported by the following organisations. Click the link to learn more:
Join the gallery in celebrating the Bird Haven Festival at Shoalhaven Heads on Sunday, October 21 from 9am to 3pm. Add to the endangered bird wire sculpture with re-purposed weaving materials. Or come along to Shoalhaven River Festival on Saturday, October 26 and visit the gallery team in the ArtZone. Centred around artist Sally McKay's practice, join in making installation art from recycled and organic materials.
On Saturday, October 5 three exciting new exhibitions will open at the gallery. NOW Contemporary Art Prize is back for the fourth time, and will be the biggest to date, with a $10,000 first prize. This year saw a record number of artists submitting works, and after a rigorous day of shortlisting, the judges selected 38 artworks from a total pool of 199 entries in a wide variety of media from right across Australia. These works reflect on the ways contemporary art pushes boundaries and comments on our world and the artist's place in it.
Alongside NOW, Shoalhaven local Greer Taylor presents ephemeral, photographic and sculptural responses to a moment in time, intercepting the cycle of life in a wild place. Sydney based artist Michelle Hiscock juxtaposes the Shoalhaven and MacDonald rivers in Two Rivers, featuring beautiful atmospheric paintings which explore her impressions and deepening awareness of the historical resonance of each place.
If you'd like to hear more about Greer or Michelle's practice, come along at 11am on Saturday, October 5 for a floor talk in the galleries. This will be followed by the official launch of the exhibitions from noon until 2pm, to which all are welcome.
