The shitbox is Gary Gilbert's and Adam Long's wheels for October's Shitbox Rally from Melbourne to Townsville, via Birdsville.
The event is now in its 10th year and challenges participants to drive a car valued at less than $1000 across the country to raise $2 million for the Cancer Council. Over the years more than $20 million has been raised.
Gary and Adam are team 'Long Way Home' and their theme 'Redback on the Shitbox' has spun to life, thanks to some help from Shoalhaven Signs and Vehicle Wraps.
The car now sports some menacing redback graphics and a map of the route that lies ahead.
All teams must raise $5000 to participate in the event. Team Long Way Home has already smashed its target, currently sitting at $6700.
A trivia night held at Berry Street Cafe helped boost the kitty.
"We were hoping to raise $1000 that night and we raised $2160 so we were thrilled," Gary said.
"It was a fantastic night."
Gary thanked everyone who's supported them, the team at Shoalhaven Signs and Vehicle Wraps for their creation, and orthopedic surgeon Paul Jarman who's helped in more ways than one.
Along with a $1000 donation, Paul's helped Gary get back behind the wheel after he badly injured his finger working on the ute.
A four-week stint with a pin in his finger and a further operation should see Gary back up and running in time his third annual Shitbox Rally.
Both Gary and Adam agreed it's a cause that's close to both their hearts.
"I don't think there's a person out there who hasn't been touched by cancer in some way," Gary said.
Gary's wife has had cancer and his daughter Tegan is currently fighting breast cancer.
They're in for a bumpy six days on the road, with at least 80 per cent of the trek dirt road. Gary said the memories and friendships he's gained from previous rallies will last a lifetime.
