It's been a promising start for full-field competition teams at St Georges Basin Football Club in SDFA's opening round. The club has put a lot of effort into preseason engagement and training with junior and senior teams, and recent matches have illustrated the positive atmosphere at the club.

In Under 13s, the girls, more than half of whom have returned after last season's development year, put on a great show with a 4-2 victory over Huskisson. The team put together a lot of connecting passes and Isabel Filtness put her preseason goalie training to work with a great first game.
Under 13 boys B Red had a 5-3 victory over United. Under 13 Boys B White team got ooff to a good start with a 2-1 lead over Culburra, however finished with a 2-4 loss. It was a well fought game. Under 13 Boys A side faced up against United at home and dominated the game with a 6-0 win over United.
The Under 15 Boys B side is a fresh team this year with mostly younger players and a few out-of-area boys. Their opening game was a demonstration of teamwork and skill chalking up an 8-1 win over Huskisson. Tom Schofield, newly out of goals this season, showed what an asset he is in play-making on the field whilst Josh Moroney dazzled the crowd with an accurate bicycle kick on goals. Newcomer Lucas Bethencourt demonstrated sure hands in goals with some great saves. The Under 17 boys had the bye.
Women's first round saw all three grades come away with wins. Reserve grade Red dominated with a 5-1 win over Callala whilst Reserve grade white secured a 1-0 victory over Illaroo in a tightly contested match, with Bel Doran scoring the winning goal.
First grade women saw the debut of a number of young Basin players in seniors including 15-year-olds Lucy Brown, Ebony Smith and Halle Grainger, 16-year-old Tanja Everingham and 17-year-old Zali Everingham. The girls were supported by some experienced Basin players.
The young girls have demonstrated their worthiness for senior football, and at a first grade level, with their skill, athleticism, grit and sportsmanship. The team got a 1-0 win with Halle Grainger setting up a nice goal for Bec Kingma and Tam Lee saving a crucial penalty shot.
All three grades of men's were at Culburra in what were some hotly contested matches. Third grade went down 1-2 in a tight match. Reserve grade had a 1-1 draw.
First grade saw months of preseason training and strategic planning come to fruition with a 3-2 victory with goals going to Brendan Hobbs, Dane McGinn and Tim White. Steve King also made a great penalty save.
Head coach Paul Cubbo and first grade coach Craig Holden were proud of Saturday's performances and excited about the season to come.
