While Prime Minister Scott Morrison is widely expected to call the election this weekend, he is yet to make up his mind, he told his coalition colleagues on Tuesday.

He said he would determine the date "in a short while", saying May 11, 18 or 25 were all possibilities.

Stretching out to May 25 what would push the current parliament to its absolute limit and could make the electoral commission's task to get the votes counted ahead of the Senate's expiry at the end of June very difficult.

Mr Morrison was reportedly considering that date earlier in the year, with the suggestion the government could give the Australian Electoral Commission a budget boost to get the count done faster.

Electoral commissioner Tom Rogers appeared to nix that idea, telling a Senate committee in February it wasn't just a question of resources as there was a careful and transparent legislative process to follow and rushing came with a risk.

Mr Morrison highlighted the coalition's 2007 election slogan of 'go for growth', saying the Howard-Costello campaign failed to explain why growth was necessary.

He told the party room meeting he was determined that in the upcoming campaign, the government would not only emphasise the importance of growth but why it mattered - to fund investment in healthcare, new medicines, education, defence and the social safety net.

"This election is ours to win not theirs to lose," Mr Morrison said.

He was the Liberal Party's director during the 2001 and 2004 elections, and won his seat of Cook at the 2007 poll.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said the government had had six years in power to show what it could do.

"What is it that they say they can do in the next six weeks than the previous six years they didn't do?" he said to reporters in Canberra.

"There's been too much instability ... now they want at five minutes to midnight to get you to forget all the chaos, all of the division ... and they all want to say it'll all be better and none of that ever happened. I don't think Australians are that easily fooled."
