Direct from Houston, Texas, Eugene 'Hideaway' Bridges will be performing at the pop-up dinner and show venue Sounds Delicious on Friday, March 29 from 6pm.
Bridges made his first Australian visit in 1999 and is back to perform his latest album Live In Tallahassee (2018).
The talented blues singer and guitarist sees himself and the message of his music as an important link between the past, present and future of blues. He brings the view of "yesterday" into light when he performs, he said.
"The newest album, Live at Tallahassee, that takes me back to my early days, that takes me back 53 years ago when I used to go down to the juke joint with Daddy and I could only go during the daytime," he said.
"This is dedicated to Daddy and his teachings. The things he stood for, the sound that he was a part of, the music that inspired him that [also] inspired others to look back on who is your inspiration.
It reaches back to the juke joint to where it all began.
- Eugene 'Hideaway' Bridges
"If your Daddy inspired you, who inspired your Daddy?
"B.B. King inspired Daddy, but who inspired BB King? T-Bone Walker, Count Basie, all these different sounds from the yesterdays, it's been going on, and on and on. That's what this album does, it reaches back to the juke joint to where it all began."
As a two-year-old Bridges would follow his father, Otheneil Bridges Sr, aka Hideaway Slim, around with a plastic shovel with rubber bands on it, trying to imitate him. His Dad sat him down and asked if he really wanted to learn. Bridges said he was taught to make a statement, which aligned with his passion for blues music.
"I had to what we call earn those chords and earn those frets because, and what I mean by that is, you don't move until you actually make a statement, make a sound and you're saying something with that instrument."
Bridges said he will take the audience back to how he earned the sound.
"I'm going to break it down and sing a song about falling in love, or out of love, having a good job, having a bad job, making the best of what you've got."
