NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes, in town with South Coast MP Shelley Hancock on Wednesday, expects at least 500 children will be enrolled at the new school in Worrigee.
The grounds will be large enough for an expansion, catering for a maximum of 1000 enrolled students.
The government school's location will be determined in a matter of months.
Several sites are being investigated.
"We're already talking with local landowners about where the school might best be located," Mr Stokes said.
"The great thing with Worrigee is there's plenty of options, there's a lot of land.
"Consultation will now begin with the community and the council to plan towards the delivery of a new school."
In 2015, concerns emerged about declining class numbers at Falls Creek Public School. Parents were worried the school was on the chopping block - and that it would likely close if a new school, further north, was opened.

It has since remained open, and will stay that way according to Mr Stokes.
"There are certainly no plans for any school closures, in fact quite the opposite," he said.
"We need more schools to cater for growing demand.
"This is an area that has been growing steadily over the past decade and we know that growth is projected to continue."
Worrigee's population was 5068 at the 2016 census.
The school will fill a void, and give Worrigee residents a sense of community according to Mrs Hancock.
"There's a small park here in this reserve beside us, it's indicative and emblematic of Worrigee growing but no public infrastructure to grow with that," she said.
"That's been my concern all along, we want to build a community of interest and a school starts off a community of interest.
"This will make a big difference to the social fabric of Worrigee."
