Heartened by Nowra audiences on her most recent regional tour, Prada hopes to see people dancing in the aisles of the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre again.
Regional people have been warm and generally respectful to Prada.
“I mean, I’ve just walked in here [entertainment centre] in Nowra, in broad daylight, in a leotard that’s clearly showing all my assets and they haven't even blinked,” Prada said.
“No one’s laughed or carried on.”
If you’ve never seen a drag act, you’re not alone.
“You have to try everything at least once,” Prada said.
“A lot of the time regional audiences know about drag but they may not have had the opportunity to see it.
“A lot of women say, ‘Oh, I’ve dragged my husband along,’ and half the time he’s the one wanting photos with me at the end, saying, ‘That was brilliant, I wasn’t expecting that.’”
If you come to the show, Les Divas: An All-Male Revue, you can expect three drag queens to impersonate 12 divas including Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Diana Ross.
The 90-minute revue will take audiences down memory lane to relive their greatest hits including If I Could Turn Back Time, Get the Party Started, Proud Mary, I Will Always Love You, and I’m Coming Out.
Prada impersonates Cher.
“I love it, she’s basically a drag queen, her costumes, her persona, her carry-on, I love her,” she said.
Prada’s career lifted off after her first visit to a drag show about 11 years ago.
“I was so into it, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing,’ and I thought, ‘I could never do that,’” she said.
“Exactly a month later I’d bought heels, a wig, a dress and I was tarting up and down Oxford Street.”
She said being naturally positive prevents her from being exposed to nastiness, and when she does cop flack, she laughs it off.
“In the early days, people used to yell things out to me, like, ‘Ugh you look like a man,’ and it’s like, ‘Well derr, it’s because I am,’” she said.
“It didn't bother me. On stage, I’m trying to impersonate a woman, but I’m not trying to be a woman.”
