Waves improved throughout the afternoon, offering an action-packed final two hours of action that included a strong performance by Culburra Beach’s Owen Wright.
In heat two of the opening round, the Culburra Beach Boardrider took on Brazilian pair Yago Dora and Miguel Pupo.
Despite waves of 5.77 and 3.83, for a combined 9.60, Wright, competing at his 100th CT event, finished second in the heat, losing to Dora who scored 9.83 – with Pupo only managing 2.00.
As such, Wright, the current world number five, will now take on Hawaii’s Seth Moniz in a sudden death round two showdown.
