AFTER cruising through the opening rounds of the VANS World Cup of Surfing, a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 10,000 event, in Hawaii, Culburra Beach’s Owen Wright was narrowly eliminated in his round four heat.

At stop number two of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing – held at Sunset Beach, Oahu – the Culburra Beach Boardrider finished third in heat four of the fourth round.
Despite scoring strong waves of 7.43 and 6.07, for a combined two-wave score of 13.50, Wright was knocked out by South Africa’s Matthew McGillivray (17.00) and Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz (13.53).
The event was eventually won by Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau (12.66), from Brazil’s Jesse Mendes (7.63), France’s Joan Duru (7.33) and United States’ Griffin Colapinto (4.67).
World number five Wright will now turn his attention to the final Championships Tour event on the WSl calendar in 2018, the Billabong Pipe Masters.
Wright will open his Banzai Pipeline event in round one against Brazil’s Yago Dora and Hawaii’s Keanu Asing, in heat number two.
