The visitors, featuring Ulladulla United products Matthew Gilkes and Tom Engelbrecht, were dismissed for 396 after they resumed the day in the strong position of 2/221 – thanks largely to opening bowler Xavier Crone finishing with 6/88.
Joe Kershaw (41) and Tom Pinson (eight not out), put on 36 for the final wicket and a miracle seemed possible until Jake Reed (2/60) intervened to dismiss the former.
Kershaw also shared a 38-run eighth wicket stand with allrounder Tom Engelbrecht (49) to give ACT/NSW Country a chance at claiming the outright points.
In the run chase, Matthew Gilkes scored 24 [after making 28 in the first innings], while fellow opener Henry Hunt posted 98 and Justin Avendano contributed 82, but it wasn’t enough for the Comets.
During the match, Engelbrecht claimed six wickets, to go along with his 51 runs.
It was the first loss of the season for ACT/NSW Country, whereas this was Victoria’s first win in 2018/19.
The Comets next play South Australian at Karen Rolton Oval, from November 19-22, while Victoria take on Tasmania at Toorak Park the same week.
