Tuesday’s social saw Gerry Webster & JJ Martin collect first prize from a big field of bowlers, second was Bev Miller & Ron Young while John Keeffe & Mike Miezio were third, the jackpot spins were by Alan Rose & Alex Latanzio, unsuccessful as was the half spin by Willie Sulz & Ken Smart.
Wednesday night was the final of the major/minor pairs with Ken Smart & Daniel Hiscox up against Gerry Webster & Greg Salway and what a great game it was, it could have gone either way as Gerry & Greg shot away to a 9/2 lead only for Daniel & Ken to claw their way back to take the lead 11/9, shots were then traded until Daniel & Ken established a 17/12 lead with just 5 ends to play but determined play from Gerry & Greg with wonderful draw bowls saw them win those ends and claim victory 19/17.
Thursday social was a small field where Ken Smart & John Smith took out first with Garry Gilligan & Steve Helson second third being Harry Griffith & Noel Duff, the jackpot spins were by Steve Fuller & Derek Chapman unsuccessful as was the triples combination of Hugo, Fred Bernthaler & Bob Webster, Friday night was the second round of the mixed 4’s where four seasons prevailed over the night , starting in hot conditions a wind storm came up then torrential rain called a short halt and chilly conditions then closed out the night, the Chris Rae combination of Debbie Wilson, Nathan Woods & Elaine Kimpton got the better of Edwina & Wayne Skinner, Steve Helson & Bron Perkins 24/12, the Noel Duff lead team of Bev Miller, Peter Drinkwater & Kim Rudd accounted for the team of Eileen & Ron Young, Elaine Gardner & Derek Chapman in a close one 23/20, Elaine Preston, JJ & Rae Martin skipped by Gerry Webster won over Charlie Francis’s team of Paula Brown, Brian Fletcher & Dale McLachlan 25/18 and in the final game the Daniel Hiscox team of Diana Davidson, Bruce McDonald & Judy Croft were too strong for the Katheryn Hartigan, Jim Carrol, Denise Prentice & Kevin Hartigan 26/7.
Saturday was the last afternoon game as next week it will be twilight bowls commencing at 5pm, Steve Fuller & Pepe Jakus took out first, second was Bron Perkins & Barry Lawson while JJ Martin & Gerry Webster got third, the jackpot spin was by Steve & Pepe , unsuccessful as was the half spin by Keith Beresford & Graeme Hinsley, in the minor pairs Greg Tatam & Chris Rae accounted for Ron Young & Derek Chapman 21/14 & Brian Fletcher & Greg Salway were fortunate to overcome Willie Sulz & Paul Beavis 25/20 after trailing all the way.
On Sunday the minor pairs continued, in strong wind making conditions very difficult, Greg Tatam & Chris Rae had a good win over Brian Fletcher & Greg Salway 24/13, JJ Martin & Kevin Hartigan got in some “good” wicks to defeat Mark Abbott & Allan Kimpton 23/18, Steve Fuller & Pepe Jakus despite the “pineapple” and trailing for most of the game won over Jim Carroll & Mike Miezio 18/16 and the final game saw Bob Webster & Ken Smart win over Peter Drinkwater & Charlie Francis 25/17, the finals to be played this coming weekend. Coming events are the twilight bowls on Friday 10th commencing at 5pm all standards of players are welcome to come along and enjoy an evening of bowls, on Wednesday the 14th the Dave Dittman Memorial triples is on in 3 grades and some extra teams would be welcome, and finally don’t forget your tickets for the presentation night on the 30th November.

The weather was hot with a cooling breeze that made playing bowls an enriching experience. Wednesday was hot and sunny with a cooling Easterly zephyr. 34 players came out to bask in these fine conditions. 7 games of Nominated Pairs and one of Social Triples were contested. Saturday saw beautiful bowling weather with the sun shining and a light breeze swinging from the West to the East cooling 29 players. The Grand-Final of the Club Minor Singles was battled out as well as the first match of the Club Minor Pairs Championship. One game of Mixed Social Triples and four games of Pairs were also completed.
Wednesday 31st October had well prepared Greens playing at a fast speed. Rink 3 saw Steve Hollington, Bazza Waters and Trevor Politch play magnificent bowls to demolish their opposition by 24 to 11 shots. Rink 4 Paul Takac and Dooley combined well to hold off a fast finishing opposition to win by 27 shots to 21. Rink 5 In another Pairs game, Les Stuart and Paul Goddard play immaculate bowls to crush their opponents by 27 to 14 shots. Rink 6 saw Alan Rose (welcome back) and Alessandro Lattanzio blow glorious bowls to win their game by a whopping 27 shots to 18. Rink 9 in a closer game, Tommy Smith and Ray Solway had to use all their considerable skills to overcome their opponents and win by 23 to 16 shots. Rink 10 The Edwards brothers played exceptional bowls to trounce their opposition by 25 shots to 17. Rink 11 In another close game, Norm Schulz and Alan Morrissey played magnificent bowls to just get home by 22 to 19 shots. Rink 12 In the game of the week, Gary Thurston and Dave Milne got away to a great start leading 3 to 1 until a fabulous four, shot John Mac and Allan Furniss into the lead. Gary and Dave settled in and were in front by 10 shots to 7 when again, John and Allan scored a scintillating six end to again grasp that slippery lead 13 to 10. This gave them the momentum to forge ahead to a substantial lead of 16 to 12 only to see Gary and Dave slowly grind their way to the finish to be only 1 behind on the penultimate end. Who would surge at the final end? Gary and Dave held their nerve and tied the game at 16 all. Who would win the count back? Gary Thurston and Dave Milne won the count back and the game by 13 to 8 ends. What a cracker! Draw Results. Saturday 3rd November was clear, sunny afternoon. The well prepared Greens were rolling at a fast pace. Rink 2 saw the only game of Mixed Social Triples for the day. John O’Dell, Julie Buchanan and Allan Furniss played stunning bowls to win by 22 to 16 shots. Rink 4 This rink hosted the Final of the Club Minor Single Championship. John Edwards held the match up till about the 10th end when Roy Cartledge’s supremacy came to the fore as he played exceptionally accurate bowls to move in front and then, convincingly win the match by 31 shots to 17. All hail our newest 2018 Minor Singles Champion, Roy Cartledge. Rink 6 saw the first of our Minor Pairs Championship matches where Tommy Smith and Peter Smith just too good for Bazza Waters and David Solomon as they took this match by an overwhelming margin. Rink 9 observed Bert Madge and Jim Jamieson combining well to play spectacular bowls and win by 19 to 13 shots. Rink 10 The Boys gave the Girls a lesson in bowls when Tony Mikus and Steve Stobbs (welcome back) triumphed by a large score. Rink 11 observed the great game when Paul Goddard and Alessandro Lattanzio played fantastic bowls come from 17 to 18 down and win on the last end by 19 shots to 18. Rink 12 Karen Waters and Richard Grayson played superb bowls to cruise in by 23 to 17 shots. Draw Results. SATURDAY SUPER 6. 3RD NOVEMBER 2018: 10 teams played out the 3 games of 6 ends format , as usual competition was close. none of the 10 teams were able to register 3 wins on the day. Anne Dwyer & Jeff Brownjohn took the 1st place prize money with 2 wins & 1draw. 2nd place went to Ruby Salmon & Rick Neilsen with 2 wins + 10 margin.
CULBURRA v ORIENT POINT CHALLENGE 4TH NOVEMBER 2018. 1 GAME OF PAIRS & 4 GAMES OF TRIPLES. Pairs went to Orient Pt 13 to 12. Triples Orient Pt won 2 games 26 to 17 & 24 to 14. Triples Culburra won 1 game 10 to 8. Triples 1 draw 14 to 14. ORIENT POINT won the overall score by 87 to 65. Here's hoping that the ring ins from Callala & Myola were well paid for their efforts today. This day is always enjoyable with a bit of sledging thrown in ,today was no exception. Good Luck to Ken France & Brett Gilligan who travel to Raymond Terrace to represent Zone 7 at the State Rookies Pairs this weekend.
Culburra Women
Our Major Minor Triples started last week. Three games and a bye made up the first round. All games were well played, with the winners being Dawn Neville, Julie Cotton and Jean Eagleton over Marea Challender, Joy Hanneman and Marilyn O’Day, Robyn Herbert, Judy Watson and Gail Scott over Margaret Gilchrist, Carol Turton and Lorraine Epple, and Elaine Turner, Eileen Hunter and Jenny Castellan over Narrelle Wetsteyn, Ruby Salmon and Helen Neilsen. The Semi-final was then played on Thursday under very warm sunny skies. Well done to Elaine Turner, Eileen Hunter and Jenny Castellan over Dawn Neville, Julie Cotton and Thelma Cooley (sub), and Robyn Herbert, Judy Watson and Gail Scott over Eliza Gunn, Anne Dwyer and Trish Bailey. The final is set down for this Thursday and we wish both teams good luck.
Only one game of triples was played by our Social ladies last Tuesday, with Jenny Anderson (swinger), Anne Dwyer and Sandra Annetts having a win over Jenny Anderson, Maree Guilfoyle and Trish Tom. Thursday Social ladies also enjoyed their games, with Narrelle Wetsteyn, Trish Tom and Marilyn O’Day having a win over Ruby Salmon, Joy Hanneman and Annette Barry, and Jenny Anderson and Nancye Carre having a narrow win over Margaret Gilchrist and Helen Neilsen. The Culburra Beach Orient Point Challenge, a hotly contested annual event, was also played last week. Although it is always a fun day, the friendly rivalry and competition is always high – Orient Point managed the win, and everyone enjoyed lunch and a few drinks together before the trophy presentation.
Callala
The Men’s Toohey’s Pairs was played on Saturday, November 3, in fine sunny conditions. Twelve teams participated with names “drawn out of the hat”. John Wright and Paul Mitchell won the AM prize with +13. The PM prize was won by Eddie Semovente and Marty Gerkhe with +24. Garry Manning and Dion Gadd came in third with two wins +12. The runners up were Pauli Kennedy and Terry Castle with two wins +13. The winners for 2018 were Bob Fowler and Terry Renaud with two wins +23.
Don’t forget to put your name down for the combined Bowls and Golf Day next Sunday, November 11. The ladies had a fun game of triples last Tuesday, October 30. Judy Fraser (swinger) Jan Wright and Terry McMillan defeated Judy Fraser (swinger), Bev Young and Lyn Byrne, 21 – 7. No bowls yesterday because of Melbourne Cup Day.
