In round three of the Australian Hockey League, Commerrford’s Strikers edged out Gerringong’s Grace Stewart and the NSW Arrows 2-nil in Canberra.

“There was lightning during the warm-up, which saw the match start delayed 30 minutes – it was easily the closest I’ve ever been to lightning, as I swear I felt the warmth of the strike,” Commerford said.

“After a second warm-up, the game went on as programmed. We were up two goals and the game was halted with five minutes to play, because of another storm.

“After waiting around again and trying to stay warm, the game was eventually suspended – seeing us secure a memorable win.

“It’s was great to defeat rivals NSW in our last clash against them as the Strikers, as the AHL competition is set for a shake-up next year.

“A lot of players in our team have come through the NSW system, so it’s always a bit sweeter knocking them off.”

This win puts Canberra into a three-way tie with NSW and Queensland in Pool A, but Commerford’s side finished third on goal difference.

It sets up a quarter-final showdown with South Australia tomorrow, Thursday on the Gold Coast.

“We notoriously put on a strong performance against South Australia – I can’t remember the last time we lost to them,” she said.

“But they finished second in their pool for a reason, so we aren’t going to take them lightly.”

The winner of this clash will take on the victor of the Victoria and Northern Territory clash in the semi-finals.

“Overall, I’ve really enjoyed the home and away format this season, as it makes the competition feel more professional, which is great for the sport,” the former Ulladulla High student said.

“With this potentially being the last year of the Strikers in this format, it would be very special to go all the way and win for the first time – it would mean so much to all the current and former players of this club.”

Speaking of those past and present Canberra players, Commerford was honoured by the club on Saturday, being named in the Strikers greatest ever team, as a special 20^th anniversary ceremony. 

“That honour came as a big surprise to me, as I’m only relatively new to the Strikers, compared to some of the players I’ve looked up to at the club,” she said.

“To also be named in the starting side, alongside players respected both nationally and internationally is amazing.

“Especially alongside mentors like Katie Allen, Dee Jennings and Nicole Arrold, who have helped me become the player I am today.

“A lot of the players named in both the men’s and women’s sides have done great things in their lives, which motivates me to be the best person I can be.”
