Nowra's Crawford and Gerringong's Ford – both 15 – played starring roles in helping their Illawarra South Coast side go through the tournament undefeated – six months after the pair steered their ISC representative side to the under 15s state outdoor crown.
The side opened their tournament with an impressive 6-2 win against Metro South West on Friday, before backing it up later in the day with a thumping 7-1 victory over North West Sydney One – in which Crawford scored a hat-trick.
Illawarra South Coast’s momentum continued on day two, by smashing Lithgow 7-2 and Manning Valley 5-nil – to head into finals day with a perfect record.
In the semi-final, ISC was challenged but in the end, they showed too much class, to defeat Northern Sydney and Beaches 3-1, to book their spot in the decider against Metro South West, who edged Tamworth 4-3 in their semi-final.
Just like they did in the opening match of the tournament, ISC put six goals passed Metro South West’s goalkeeper, while only conceding two – to secure the state title.
Imogen Fowles was the star, scoring five goals from short corner drag flicks.
“To win one state title was great, two in the one year is in incredible,” Crawford said.
“I never dreamt of doing this in the one year.
“It was great to be able to achieve the win with virtually the same team we won the outdoor title with.
“I’d never played under coach Dave Rieck before, but it was a great experience and I learnt a lot.
“Hopefully we can now build on that – five of us go up into the older age groups [under 18s] – it will be exciting to see what we can achieve.”
The 15 girls’ team will still be in good stead for next season with four of the team still eligible to play in the same age group.
In other hockey news, the Illawarra South Coast boys team, featuring Culburra Beach’s Sam Wright-Smith and Callala’s Scott Crisafi, also claimed their under 15s state championship.
They also backed up their state outdoor title from earlier in the year.
