The Cancer Council officially announced the annual Relay For Life will be held over a 24-hour period from Saturday, March 30 at the Nowra Showground.
Relay For Life Committee Chairperson, Cathy Lucas, said the event Relay would be a little different next year.
“Participants have been telling us they want something a bit different and so we are very excited to be adding a few new instalments next year. So watch this space for more details,” Mrs Lucas said.
The organising committee also wants people to know that it’s not necessary to stay for the entire 24 hours.
“The biggest misconception about Relay For Life is that people need to stay for 24 hours,” Mrs Lucas said.
“We welcome anyone who wants to pop down for as little as an hour, do a few laps, learn about Cancer Council’s wonderful services, eat some delicious food and listen to a local band or two perform.”
Teams are being encouraged to register early for next year’s event and take advantage of the $15 registration fee.
All teams registered in October will go in the draw to win a special team prize.
Teams can register at www.cancercouncil.org.au/nowrarelay
Funds raised from Relay For Life go towards Cancer Council’s services which aim to ease the burden of cancer on people today, and reduce the impact of cancer for future generations.
The previous Relay For Life events has helped Cancer Council’s work enormously in the Shoalhaven community.
The relay’s achievements
- In 2017/18 1,780 nights of accommodation were provided for cancer patients and carers at the Shoalhaven Cancer Care accommodation facility
- Cancer Council’s volunteer transport drivers travelled 39,484 kilometres taking cancer patients to treatment and other medical appointments throughout the Shoalhaven; and
- over 2000 patients, carers and health professionals sought help from the Cancer Council Information Centre.
However, with an estimated 134,000 new cases of cancer expected to be diagnosed in Australia this year, the Shoalhaven community is being encouraged to rally behind Relay For Life and help continue this vital work.
People can register now at www.cancercouncil.org.au/nowrarelay or call Cancer Council for more information on 4223 0200.
The relay was first held in Nowra in 2003, has since been held annually, involving thousands of local residents in the fight against cancer.
To date, the Nowra based relay has raised over $2.7M for Cancer Council’s services in the local community.
